With shooting season begun, a  report carried out by the University of Strathclyde shows that Grouse Shooting has contributed tens of millions of pound to the Scottish economy over the past ten years.

Grouse shooting now generates at least £23.3 million per annum for the Scottish rural economy and supports over 1072 full time positions which is an increase since the last review in 2001.

In the early 1990’s 1% of grouse moors were profitable, this has now increased to 42% of estates with the most economically active moors being mid-sized and ones which focused on producing driven grouse.

More shooting days are now let commercial than in the past as to maintain investment in heather moor management all forms of shooting have become more expensive.

Research has also shown that there are more grouse on the Scotland’s moors than expected as the severe weather did not have the dramatic impact on the red grouse as initially thought with on average almost two young grouse for every old one.
